Discover the beauty and history of the Bavarian Alps on this exclusive day trip from Salzburg.
After pickup from your Salzburg hotel, start your morning with a scenic drive along an off-the-beaten-path route, passing the meadow where the opening scene of The Sound of Music was filmed. The road leads to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Berchtesgaden. After a short photo stop here, continue to the Obersalzberg Eagle’s Nest. Disembark and walk through the tunnel to the original WWII brass elevator that takes you up to the Eagle’s Nest.
The Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is a historic watchtower in Bavaria that offers breathtaking views of the Alps at an elevation of 1,834 meters. Built in 1938 as a gift for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday, it is one of the region's most popular tourist destinations. To reach the Eagle’s Nest, you walk through a 124-meter-long tunnel to a magnificently decorated elevator that takes you up to the building. This architectural masterpiece provides an unforgettable experience.
Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a museum in the Obersalzberg resort near Berchtesgaden, offering information on the use of the mountainside retreat by Nazi leaders, particularly Hitler, who regularly spent time in the area starting in 1928. Opened in 1999, the museum had welcomed over a million visitors by 2007. After visiting the museum, descend to the mountain town of Berchtesgaden for a visit to the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden.
The salt mine in Berchtesgaden, over 500 years old, offers an exciting underground tour. A mine railroad takes you 650 meters into the mountain to the Salt Cathedral. The first slide leads to the Stone Salt Grotto, where a salt laboratory and various stations provide fascinating insights into the history of salt mining. Another thrilling slide brings you to the spectacular Spiegelsee (mirror lake), which you cross on a raft. After exploring the mine, emerge into daylight and take a short walk to visit the grounds of Hitler’s now-destroyed home, known as the Berghof. Then, continue to the Königssee (King’s Lake), a glacial lake in an Alp-framed valley.
The world-famous Königssee (King’s Lake) is located within Berchtesgaden National Park and is part of the municipality Schönau am Königssee. Enjoy dramatic scenery with the steep cliffs of the Berchtesgaden Alps dropping almost vertically into the shores of this beautiful, emerald green mountain lake, which is up to 192 meters deep. The peninsula of St. Bartholomew, with its baroque pilgrimage church, is one of the most popular photo spots. Behind it, the eastern wall of the mountain Watzmann rises majestically. After a short photo stop at the lake, we will take a relaxed scenic return drive along the Königssee River to Salzburg, where your tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation or chosen central location.
Schloss Hellbrunn is an early Baroque villa of palatial size, near Morzg, a southern district of Salzburg, Austria. Built between 1613 and 1619 by Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, it was named for the “clear spring” that supplied it. Hellbrunn was designed as a day residence for summer use, as the Archbishop typically returned to Salzburg in the evening; hence, there is no bedroom in the palace.
For more than 400 years, Hellbrunn Palace has enchanted and amazed visitors with its trick fountains. The centerpiece is the Mannerist trick fountains, which are absolutely unique. The idyllic setting in the south of Salzburg, with teeming waters flowing down from Hellbrunn Mountain, predestined water to become a central design element. At the heart of the grounds are the Mannerist trick fountains, which remain unparalleled in the world today.
After visiting Hellbrunn Palace, we will take a return drive to Salzburg, where your tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation or chosen central location.
